Best Long Matches For Lighting BBQ Grills, Fire Pits, and Bonfires

We may not think much about matches, but it’s important to have them on hand. Whether it’s to light the grill, start a fire in the fire pit, stick matches are an important resource. And that’s not to mention how often they come in handy around the house!

Sure, there are alternatives. But sometimes it’s the simplest things that are the most dependable. Electricity may go out and spark lighters run out of fuel unexpectedly. But with matches, you always know exactly what’s left. And if you keep them dry, they’ll almost always work.

What’s Important In Picking Stick Matches

No matter what you plan to light, you want to keep your fingers out of the way of the flame. With most activities around the yard, that means you need long matches. You have to reach to the center of a pile of charcoal or stack of kinding, or perhaps start a tiki torch that’s a little beyond the reach of a cigarette light or book match. So you’ll want to keep a box of long matches on hand!

You also want to be sure they’re sturdy enough that they don’t snap in half when you light them. Some of this depends on good technique, but you also have to look out for flimsy matchsticks. It doesn’t do any good to buy “long” matches that end up in pieces!

Caring For Stick Matches

Any matches should be stored in a cool, dry, and dark space. Humidity can damage the head, making it impossible to strike the match.

“Strike anywhere” matches are ideal but are hard to come by. Most matches still need to be struck on a specific surface to create the right chemical reaction to produce a flame.

Treat the striking surface with care; try not to use too much force or hold an already-lit match too close to it since it can wear out and become unusable.

Recommendations for Long Stick Matches

These are the brands of long matches that we prefer to use at home.

Diamond Long Reach Matches

This set of three boxes of 10 inch matchsticks includes a total of 225 matches.

They light easily and the sticks are durable; they rarely break while striking.

And it’s a great price for a three-pack!

Quality Home 11” Matches

Four boxes of 40 matches each are included in this purchase – a total of 160 matches. They’re high-quality and easy to strike. The great price is an added bonus.

They’re durable and reliable. We have no hesitation in recommending them.

Duraflame Matches 11″

Duraflame’s 11-inch wood matches are great. They snap infrequently and light easily. You’ll be satisfied with the quality.

The only thing we don’t like about these at the price. At the time of this review, the box of 50 cost as much as the multiple boxes included in the other options reviewed here.

Long stick matches should be kept in every home. Even if you normally prefer a butane or electric lighter, stick matches make a great backup. Be sure to keep at least one box on hand – if you use them regularly for lighting your grill or bonfire, keep a few available!
